Description: |
Since the end of the Vatican Council, questions have been raised
about issues of authority, obedience, and freedom within the
Church. New methodologies of scriptural analysis and increasing
sophistication in the social sciences have sometimes been
employed in public controversy and have generated private debate
on the nature and source of Church authority, as well as the
degree and kind of obedience expected of the people of God. The
goal of this book is to look at the need for authority and
obedience, the role of personal freedom in the context of
obedience, how structures of authority have developed, and how
they currently function within the Church. This text includes an
overview of authority, obedience, and freedom, applications of
freedom's need for authority and obedience, and the relationship
between authority and service. Discussion questions follow each
section. Such questions include, for example, "When in your
experience was authority needed to decide between a number of
good options for dealing with a community need?" and "Do you
agree with the general principle that the Catholic intellectuals
do not have the right to freedom of speech within their teaching
specialty, but only a right to practice their scholarly
discipline? Why or why not?"
