Jacques Cousteau and the Undersea World

French marine explorer Jaques-Yves Cousteau is one of the most important figures in ocean exploration. He was one of the inventors of the Aqua-Lung, a self-contained breathing apparatus, that allowed divers to take their own oxygen supply with them into the water and freed them to wander and explore the ocean floor.

One of Cousteau's most important accomplishments may have been in bringing the wonders fo the ocean to millions of viewers around the world, through documentaries and later through the long running television show "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau". The explorer died in 1997 at the age of 87, with his passing mourned around the world.
